Faith Cao

Our VIP player for the month is Faith Cao.
Faith has come to Vancouver Island from Guangzhou city in China which some of us remember as Canton two and a half years ago.
Having started playing at age 6 and competing in school Faith got an early love of the game.
Enjoying the exercise and the competition equally she plays 1-2 times a week and is on the Victoria Phoenix Div 2 Team where she has a 6-5 singles record, her only loss coming to Stormin' Bob Nemec.
Faith took the Ladies singles Title in the Inaugural Victoria Open this year with a final victory over the steady Lihong Sun.
Welcome to Vancouver Island TT Faith.

The registration of Vancouver Island Senior's Tournament has now begun. This tournament opens for anyone 50 and above. There are five events - Ladies Singles, Men’s Singles, Ladies Doubles, Men’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles.

Singles events are divided into 3 categories: 50+, 60+ and 70+. Ladies and Men's Doubles events are divided into two categories: 50+ and 60+. Mixed doubles event is not sub-divided.

The restriction is only on minimal age. A 75 years old participant can compete in 50+ category if he/she chooses to. For Men's Doubles and Women's Doubles, double partners must be in the same age category (for example, a 55 years old and a 75 years old can compet in 50+ category, but not in 70+ category).

The tournament will take place at Cedar Hill Rereation Center on Sunday, September 27. Deadline for entries is September 23, 2015. Entry fee is $10, which includes your entry for one event. Additional events are $5 each (maximum 3 events).

There will be 3 matches for every entry (two in the round robin and then one in the consolation if you are eliminated).

Nanaimo Drop-In Fees Increase

Unfortunately, the city of Nanaimo refused all requests to keep the rental price at the current amount and thus we are forced to increase the fee to $10, effective immediately.

It is an unfortunate and it sounds steep, but please realize that it is the only way to keep the Vitta league alive. Otherwise all teams outside Victoria would be immediately put into a no-play situation since there is no place in Victoria able to accommodate early afternoon league matches.

We hope that this unpleasant change will not affect the current league and all matches in Nanaimo will proceed as scheduled.

VSCPA First Table Tennis Tournament

Victoria Society of Chinese Performing Arts will host their first table tennis tournament on June 3rd and 10th at Gordon Head United Church. The deadline for entries is May 31, 2015.

Victoria Table Tennis Championship

Registration for the 2nd Annual Victoria Table Tennis Championship has been opened. The event will be held at Henderson Recreation Centre on June 21st, 2015. Follow this link for more details. The deadline for entries is June 16, 2015.

55+ BC Games

The 55+ BC Games (formerly called the BC Seniors Games) will be held in North Vancouver August 25-29 this year. Anybody who turns 55 by the end of the year can apply to participate. Table Tennis is played in two divisions, "recreational" and "competitive", so there tends to be a place for everyone. The application deadline is April 30 (but might be extended to May 15). Contact Uschi.Leslie@shaw.ca for more details.

Vitta League 2015 Starting on April 26

The new season will start on April 26. We have 7 teams in Division 1 and 5 teams in Division 2. The schedule for matches is being determined and will be posted shortly.

Registration for Vitta 2015 Opened

Registration for the new season Vitta 2015 has been opened. Please follow the link below to register your team (note that the team name, names and emails of captain and vice-captain and at least 2 additional players are required). This year, we decided to let you choose the division you would like to play at. But please be rational and note that Vitta reserves a right to move you to a different division according to the circumstances.

Update: Registration is now closed

Most Improved Player 2014 Award

As all scheduled matches of the Vitta 2014 league have been played and winners of both divisions are known, its time to announce the player who improved the most during this season.

There were total of 504 games (singles and doubles) played in 41 matches with total of 57 players participated at least in one match (25 in Division 1 and 32 in Division 2). Unfortunately, not everyone had a rating at the beginning of the season, and thus could not be awarded regardless of how impressive results he or she achieved. Kudos to our new player Bogdan Sokol who lost only two games out of twenty (in singles) which made him 3rd highest ranked player in our league right after his first season, well done!

Only three players with at least 9 games played remain unbeaten, Frank Fang (division 2) with 18 wins, Clara Sabina (division 1) with 9 wins and Sasha Brkic (division 1) with 15 wins! Its very rare to see these players winning mip award as there is not much room to improve when you are already on top.

Interestingly enough, the three most improved players are from the same team (The Swat Team) with Mike Hughes on the 3rd place (increasing his rating by 11% and total gain of 137 points), Andreas David on the 2nd place (increasing his rating by 17% and total gain of 248 points) and, our winner, Attila Fritz increasing his rating by 18% with total gain of 239 points.

Congratulations to all winners!

Here are few words from the MIP Award 2014 winner:

Q: Mr. Fritz do you attribute your improved results to any specific training or tactics that you have adopted for this years campaign?
Attila: Improving my posture and footwork has really helped.
Q: Is there anyone you would like to credit with helping your game to make the jump in your results?
Attila: No one in particular but I would like to thank all my practice partners.
Q: What bat and rubbers have you found suited your playing style the most?
Attila: I have settled on using Tenergy 64 on forehand and Tenergy 80 on the backhand. Blade is Butterfly Gergely.
Q: How many years have you been seriously playing table tennis?
    Attila: Three years.

Players Ratings Updated

Ratings of all active players in the league have been updated and are available on the Most Improved Player Award page. Ratings were calculated according to USATT Rating System. Players that were unrated at the beginning of 2014 Vitta League were assigned a temporary rating based on completed games in the league. Temporary rating is removed after 5 wins and 1 loss or 9 wins against rated players. Some players didn't meet this criteria and thus still having temporary rating (denoted by T appended to their rating value). Note that if you play against players with temporary rating, you can gain but cannot lose points.

All Stats Updated

Match results and individual player stats for singles and doubles have been updated for both 2014 league divisions.
In 'Match Results & Schedule' and 'Player Stats' tables, click on 'Details' to get an overview of individual games and scores for given match and/or player.

2014/06/14 NOTICE - Two League Matches To Be Rescheduled
Henderson Rec will be closed from Monday, June 16th to Monday, June 30th. The Div 1 League match between Victorians and Victoria B, and the Div 2 match between Phoenis and Victoria D will be rescheduled as the venue will be closed. New date to be announced later.

2014/05/24 New Scoresheet and Table Tennis Day Announcement
Based on feedbacks of league players, we have replaced the old scoresheet with a new one that is simplified and hopefully will cause less confusion. There is also a "filled" sample to help players understand how to fill the scoresheet. Please note the new sheet will require captain's (or representative's) signature from both teams.

The following announcement is from Uschi Leslie:

Table Tennis Day in Victoria on June 7

Event Poster

Come and participate in some or in all Table Tennis events on Saturday June 7 at Cedar Hill Rec Centre in Victoria! These events are sponsored by the BC Seniors Games Society, but EVERYBODY is invited, not just seniors. Bring your friends!

There will have an UMPIRE COURSE which will take about 2 hours (from 11 am to 1 pm), and at the end you'll be a "certified club umpire". Please consider taking this course - we need club umpires! The cost is $30 ($20 if you are a BCTTA member), and the BC Seniors Games Society is paying half of that, so your cost is only $15 (or even $10).

If you don't want to take the course there will be TT tables set up for open practice.... no fee! There will also have some "interzone games" for members of the BCSGS.

From 1:30 to 4:30 pm we will have an interesting and probably really fun TOURNAMENT where everyone gets to play all the time, only doubles are played, you don't have to have a partner, and a single winner emerges at the end!! (And the winner will get a prize, too.)

Participation will be capped at 40, and tournament registration fee will be $5.

And since I have booked the venue until 6 pm we might even show a movie at the end (maybe "Ping Pong" about the people preparing for the 80+ world championship??).

Please register in advance (even though payment is not due until on the day), and especially if you will be taking the umpire course. The course instructor is coming over from Vancouver and needs to know how many people are taking the course.

Remember, you don't have to do everything - you can come for part of the day.

Payment for the course and/or tournament will be at the door.
